Dental care in Korea

Using Korean health insurance at the dentist as a foreign resident

Am I enrolled?

Since July 2019, foreigners who stay in Korea for 6 months or more are enrolled in National Health Insurance (NHIS). If you work for a company, you are usually enrolled through your workplace from the start of your job. If you are not sure, the NHIS foreigner helpline and the 1345 immigration contact centre can check in several languages.

What to bring

Your residence card (외국인등록증, ARC). The front desk uses your registration number to confirm your insurance. You do not need a separate insurance card.

Usually covered

  • Examination and X-rays
  • Scaling once each calendar year, from age 19
  • Amalgam and glass ionomer fillings
  • Root canal treatment
  • Extractions, including wisdom teeth
  • Gum treatment
  • Sealants on children's permanent molars, age 18 and under
  • Implants and dentures from age 65, within set limits

Usually not covered

  • Implants under 65
  • Crowns and tooth-coloured inlays for adults
  • Orthodontics, veneers and whitening

For anything not covered, we tell you the full price before treatment starts. Coverage rules are set by NHIS and can change, so we confirm at your visit.

Unpaid insurance premiums

If NHIS premiums are unpaid, benefits can be restricted. If you get a notice from NHIS, contact them before your appointment.

Questions

I have private travel insurance. Can I use it?

You can pay at the clinic and claim from your insurer. We give you an itemised receipt and, on request, an English treatment summary.

Do my children have insurance too?

Family members registered as your dependants are covered. Children's check-ups and molar sealants are covered by insurance.

General information, not a diagnosis. Your dentist will advise you after an examination.
