Gijisi Tug-of-War Festival: Dangjin's UNESCO-listed spring tradition
A tradition shared with Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines
In 2015 UNESCO added "Tugging rituals and games" to its list of intangible cultural heritage as a joint inscription by Korea, Cambodia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Gijisi Juldarigi in Dangjin is one of the Korean traditions in that listing. If you grew up with kéo co in Vietnam or similar games at home, this is a festival with a familiar feeling.
The rope
The festival is famous for its huge rope, made by hand from rice straw over several weeks. It is far too thick to hold in one hand, so smaller ropes are attached to its sides for people to pull.
When and where
The festival is usually held in April in Songak-eup, near the Gijisi Juldarigi museum. Exact dates change each year, so check Dangjin City's announcements in spring.
Joining in
The main pull divides people into two teams. Wear gloves and comfortable shoes, and expect crowds.
A note from the dentist
Pulling hard makes many people clench their teeth. If you already have jaw pain or a cracked tooth, relax your jaw while you pull, and see us if pain continues afterwards.
